guifi.net, a community based free and neutral network with no limits, has doubled the number of connections in just six months.

Catalonia, May 14^th, 2.007. Just after six months of the announcement of the 1.000 working nodes after three years of building civilian, free, open and neutral networks, guifi.net has doubled its size reaching the 2.000 milestone and having more than 2.700 kilometers (1.600 miles) of linear connections, with presence of working nodes in more than 96 municipalities in Catalonia. That means that more than 5.000 people are day to day using guifi.net for accessing broadband and demonstrates that the common, neutral and free networks are a real alternative to conventional operators also in the last mile.

Helping the digital inclusion and the universal access to the internet.

With this thousands of homes connected through the free networks, in some villages the digital inclusion rates raised to levels close to the 100% of the population, stimulates civil participation in new technologies and breaks obstacles for groups with difficulties or with no alternative for a broadband access. Internet access become possible through shared connections or public access points located in telecenters, libraries or public information points which can be accessed by the people by building a self service network model.

A productive policy for the local administrations

All the experience of the last years constructing free networks together with up to 47 local administrations becomes available through guifi.net to all the new elected representatives after the elections for local administrations of the May 27^th in Spain who want to work for developing free civil and neutral networks in their respective territories, guifi.net also encourage politicians in the same direction all over the world.

Soon will reach the networks being developed in the metropolitan area of Barcelona by local activists and will create a country-wide wireless network which will include coverage in a large European city.
